food

unsurprised: many kinds of potatoes to be found in the shops.
kinda suprised: no spinach or silverbeet anywhere.
unsurprising but still vexing: no tofu or miso soup anywhere either.

it was also at first confusing how few supermarkets or even fruit shops i can find. licensed convienience stores? everywhere. beer or bacon i can find 24 hours a day. fresh vegies? not so easy.

have the rescheduled job interview tomorrow, wish me luck!

Surprised: you're looking for silverbeet?

Admittedly, I can't for the life of me think what silverbeet is. But it sounds like a cross between silverfish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverfish) and beetroot (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dhammza/94635795/in/set-1537967/), which is the stuff of nightmares.

Good luck!

a wikipedia link, cause you'd not be complete without one: also known as chard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chard)
it's like surly spinach. certain people think it tastes exactly like spinach only without the dirt; to be honest i prefer the taste of spinach but silverbeet is easier to grow.
i'm basically trying not to get scurvy; the whole "eat for free at work" thing is much more useful than i appreciated when i could buy vegetables at the shops.
beetroot that had legs was not previously stuff of my nightmares, so thanks for that image.
