I know a bunch of you already read library_mofo, but you also have to go read this thread of librarian noir stories on forumopolis.

also, how can i convince that my computer that it's online, and as such, can synchronise the windows clock? it keeps going out by 6 or 7 minutes and the option to synchronise to internet time is greyed out, even though i am connected.

There's a very angry man for you...

I must go have a look at [livejournal.com profile] library_mofo...

I would guess that your greyed out option might be because your computer hasn't been configured to know where to find a time server, not because it doesn't know it's online.

but it always used to know how to check the time on the internet - this is a recent thing, since i left home. the only thing i've changed is the time zone, and i tried changing it back but that doesn't help either.

Was some machine on your local network at home running a time server?

(My Linux boxes run proper NTP servers and use samba to provide the current time via windows networking too. My windows machines update from that when they boot, but they'd have no idea how to get the correct time if they weren't attached to my local network.)

don't think so, as, now i've been playing round with it, the option is no longer greyed out. it's still not working, but at least it's not working at a different level! now, the rpc server is unavailable? this is a really dodgy connection though.
