OH. "shift" in ireland does not mean "move" or "change places" or "take turns" AT ALL. (though, what it does mean would usually entail moving, yes.)
For an amusing look of horrified incomprehension, tell a roscommon boy to shift yer arse already.

I wasn't going to go to dublin twice in a week! But hey, i have tomorrow off. There is a comic convention. let us check train and bus timetables.

Oh, world Englishes. They so random.

I made it to France! so we are practically neighbours now. It is very strange to be here.

Well when you put it like that it is very disgusting, and well awkard to do to yourself. However by context he should have kknown you didn't mean that!

Enjoy the trip to the big smoke, i am not heading towards the con, saving so i can actually afford to go to Octocon....

hence the incomprenhension. and now he knows that no one will understand him when he moves to brisbane, it will be amusing. and someone will ask him 'can't you speak the queen's english' and he will FROTH AT THE MOUTH.

So, uhh, you going to fill us in there, Bill Bryson? :P

well, take a wild swing at it from context.
depending on your town and peer group it's either pash or shag. but generally they don't use pash over here. at least i am hearing it in a kiwi accent but not a galway accent.

Ah well, I thought it probably had to be that. But I can't quite imagine the etymology.

Tell the Irish I said sorry about the rugby.

[identity profile] celuran.livejournal.com 2007-10-03 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
oh they know. they are too.

i am disturbingly enough quite enjoying the rugby. and can even say stuff like, did you see the wales fiji match? wasn't that cool? hurray for fiji!
I can mostly say this kind of thing because the welsh centre is hot.

here's a project: etymology of slang in a country with two official languages. You don't have anything else to do, right?

[identity profile] rogue-scholar.livejournal.com 2007-10-04 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not much else on, just the last three weeks of semester before graduation; traditionally a quiet time.

The Welsh centre's hotness is amply compensated for by the Welsh captain's, um, face. I mean yowzers - that's real "better send the kids to bed before the scary man comes on the TV" territory.

Yes, hooray for Fiji! I stayd up until 3am to watch that match, but it was worth it. Rugby is a wonderful game that involves not nearly as many thumbs up bottoms as people think.

many of the irish were scared of the aussies when that story spread. especailly as one of the carlton footy players came to this very town and punched a barman in the face! it doesn't matter which code! they cried. better get out before the soccer players come thru!
before i got here though.
i also dislike the welsh uniform. the girls and i are sitting there, dissing the uniforms. the boys look strangely at us, cause they are actually watching the game. gender stereotyping! but this is the country women weren't allowed in pubs till MY LIFETIME.
