a conversation on the phone at work today:

me: Library, Emilly speaking
someone on the phone who didn't bother to identify herself: Hey, what's that thing buried in Switzerland? It's underground, it's big.
me: The large hadron collider?
the other person: yes! thankyou! *hangs up*

i was also asked: how to add an email signature in Outlook; how to add something to the internet*; where is nova scotia; how much does it cost to mail a dvd; and what's the other word instead of eskimo.

apparently I am the the person that knows THINGS about STUFF.

*yes. I worked out that they meant to our school's website, in which case the answer is, you can't. But you can email it to me if you would like me to add it.

In other news, I bought myself a real pair of skates. THEY GO FAST.

lol, welcome to my world :)

Today, I had to climb over the kids sitting outside the library who we discussing "How do you prove the tree made a sound when it fell over?"

Common questions have included: "You know that book with the pink cover?"; "What's the name of the new teacher?" and "Where can I buy a ?"

I know far too much crap that I wish I didn't and I've got really good at observing and making note of a lot of things.

I'm still pleased about the day a little old lady asked me for the book with the red cover - in a public library, when I'd never met her before - and I worked out which one she meant.

From my days in Closed Reserve:

Student, clueless: "Can I have that book? You know, the maths one?"
Me, magically producing the appropriate volume: "This one?"
Student, briefly awed: "Wow! You know everything"

Some days I felt like a stage magician.

Oh yeah, people assume I'm psychic all the time. It's fun!

Super Powers!

But you DO know THINGS about STUFF, so that's alright then! :o)

I think you should answer the phone by yelling 'Inuit'! Who knows. On a good day you'll maybe cover 10 or 20% of caller queries before they've said anything.

i think there was at least one (six hour) shift at the public library where i just started with "Hi. We don't have a copy of the Twilight dvd available for borrowing, but I can put a reserve on it for you." and saved at least two minutes off each transaction.

Skates? You should add tassels.

[identity profile] celuran.livejournal.com 2010-04-21 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
i scoff at your tassels and suggest a matt black helmet. still need to get a mouthguard though

Wow, skates not blades? I think that officially makes you Retro...

[identity profile] celuran.livejournal.com 2010-04-21 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if you know this (i think three of your committee are into it!), but derby is fucking awesome. (http://vrdl.wordpress.com/) And you need quad skates for it.

Oh yeah, that thing! That I totally didn't forget about!

So are you playing on 22nd May?

[identity profile] celuran.livejournal.com 2010-04-21 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
oh god no. spectator only at this point. (you can tell because of how the only injuries I've been having are knitting or conbook related.) i just like skating, even if i am crap at it.

[identity profile] hespa.livejournal.com 2010-04-30 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
But with plans to play at some point?

I love my rollerblades, even though I hardly ever get out on them these days and when I do it's usually on the (quiet) streets. Haven't been to a skate park in ages!
